Co-Owner Chats: What Makes WMF Cobham a Standout Environment for Young Players

14 November 2025

The WMFC Philosophy

At WMF Cobham, our philosophy is simple: create a professional environment where every child feels valued, confident and constantly improving. From the moment a player walks in, our goal is to make them feel like a footballer. The first step is always the same... a ball at their feet. With any luck, that’s all the encouragement they need to get started. If not, one of our coaches will step in for a short one-to-one, guiding them through some basic dribbling movements. Usually, by the time they look up, they’re five metres away from their parents and smiling. That first independent touch is the beginning of everything.

Cobham is a place steeped in football, and with Chelsea’s training ground just around the corner, the standards in the local area are high. We don’t see ourselves as competing with that environment; we see ourselves as complementing it. Our focus is on individual technical development, the sort of foundation that benefits players in every team they go on to represent. We aim to give children the tools, confidence and understanding that allow them to express themselves wherever they play.

Enjoyment is at the centre of what we do. Children learn best when they’re happy, engaged and confident. When they enjoy coming to training, they listen more, try harder and start practising in their own time. The development that follows is natural and long-lasting.

What Are the Non-Negotiables in a Session

Every session we deliver at WMF Cobham follows a clear professional structure. Our non-negotiables are simple: high energy, constant involvement and technical repetition. Every player should be active, focused and learning throughout the hour. There’s no standing around, no long queues, no wasted time. The aim is always to maximise touches and decision-making moments.

The earlier a player becomes comfortable with the ball, the more time they have to refine their technique. That comfort only comes through repetition... meaningful, challenging, game-realistic repetition. Too often, in large matches or unstructured sessions, players spend more time watching than participating. We design our sessions so that every child gets as many touches as possible, while still learning how to apply their skills under pressure.

Our coaches, led by Co-Owner and Head of Coaching Rory Mathers, work to the same standards. We’ve set clear expectations for session delivery, behaviour and communication so that every child receives the same high-quality experience. Within those boundaries, our coaches have the freedom to adapt their approach to the group in front of them. The result is a structured, purposeful and enjoyable environment that mirrors the professionalism of an academy while retaining the accessibility and warmth of community football.

Why Coming to a WMF Session Will Be the Highlight of Your Child’s Week

We often hear from parents that our sessions become the highlight of their child’s week, and that’s exactly what we want. Each session should be something they look forward to, where they’re pushed, encouraged and made to feel part of something special. Safety always comes first, but enjoyment sits right behind it. When a child loves coming to training, the learning takes care of itself.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to see so many players grow, not just in ability but in confidence and character. Some who were shy on day one now arrive early to help set up; others stay behind to pack away or assist with younger players. Those behaviours show that they feel ownership of what we’re building here. That’s development beyond football. It is leadership, teamwork and pride.

Behind the scenes, we hold ourselves to the same standards as we expect on the pitch. My background in operations means we run WMF Cobham with professional systems and planning. The more efficient we are in our organisation, the more time our coaches can dedicate to delivering quality sessions.

Looking forward, I believe youth football will continue to evolve towards smaller-sided formats and focused technical work; areas that align perfectly with what we already do. Three-a-side competitions, one-to-one sessions and a greater emphasis on individual skill will become the new normal. We want WMF Cobham to lead that movement, helping every player build the technical base and mindset that modern football demands.

Ultimately, our success isn’t measured in trophies or trials. It’s measured in progress, in the smiles, confidence and excitement of every child who leaves our pitch a little better than when they arrived. If coming to WMF Cobham is the best hour of their week, then we’ve achieved what we set out to do.
